PMI GLOBAL STUDIO

I worked at PMI Global Studio in central London for five years as a senior UX Designer until recently (I am currently freelancing and seeking my next role). I built digital learning products that improved user engagement and reduced learning spend within the organisation.

I also devised and with my team, and deployed an award winning business automation tool that saved millions in design and build costs for PMI.

UX DESIGN & LEARNING DESIGN

I led projects to redesign core platform interfaces within PMI to improve usability. This involved collaborating across product, engineering and design to align on goals, planning design sprints, facilitating design workshops and reviews, and getting buy-in from stakeholders.

I was also responsible for establishing and evolving UX processes, guidelines and standards to raise the overall quality of our products. I also mentored newer members of staff in digital design practices and introduced new tools to the team to improve collaboration and output.

My team were an in-house design studio supporting the learning functions of the business. Learning design is the deliberate and systematic process of crafting effective learning experiences. It involves understanding learners' needs, goals, and preferences, as well as aligning instructional strategies, content, and assessments to achieve desired learning outcomes.

We employed various learning theories, instructional technologies, and assessment methods to create engaging and meaningful learning environments that support knowledge acquisition, skill development, and critical thinking.

Mixing this thinking with UX design thinking was a large part of my role within PMI. As you would expect, I worked on multiple projects much of which is covered by NDA's; however you will find some examples and some more detail.

UX DESIGN

As a UX designer, I aim to create digital experiences that resonate deeply with users. Through research and collaboration, I craft interfaces that seamlessly meld with users cognitive processes. Working alongside developers and stakeholders, I create designs that ultimately elevate a products usability.

My main functions as a UX designer at PMI were :
• Conduct user research to understand behaviors, needs, and pain points.
• Develop personas and journey maps to guide design decisions.
• Create wireframes and prototypes to visualize designs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers.
• Conduct usability testing and gather feedback.
• Ensure designs adhere to accessibility standards.
• Advocate for user-centric design principles.

DESIGN SYSTEMS & UI

Atomic Design & User Interface Design

I'm a designer with over 20 years of experience in the creation of digital products across a range of platforms. I've been creating design systems for a number of years now using atomic design principles. In the past I'd use Sketch, Zeplin, Craft & Abstract - now its a lot easier and logical and I build these systems with Figma.

Design Systems provide a unified framework of design principles and reusable components, ensuring consistency across websites and applications.

LEARNING DESIGN

Learning Design Content

A large part of my role was applying UX thinking to Learning Design products at PMI. All good employers have a responsibilty to provide learning resources to their employees. Our in house team created learning design that recieved great engagement, ensured all learning design principles were adhered to, and was often delivered in ten or more languages. The capture below represents part of a large project I delivered at PMI Global Studio. Colleagues at PMI put out a 'RFP' to three large learning design vendors. They received 3 quotes from the vendors ranging from £323000 - £525000 for the body of work proposed.
I worked with a single developer to deliver the proposed learning design content. We delivered 120 individual content pieces in a six week timeline saving PMI the quoted cost and delivering the work in house.

Learning design involves the intentional planning and creation of educational experiences to facilitate effective learning outcomes. It encompasses the strategic alignment of content, activities, assessments, and technologies to engage learners and promote understanding, retention, and application of knowledge and skills.

AUTOMATION

Award Winning Business Automation

External vendor spend on creative agencies at PMI amounts to a lot of spend outside the organisation. We created our own CMS to generate learning design content that gave users the ability to create pixel perfect design with all the necessary UX standards included. This system also helped standardise content, globally and ensure consistentcy in design. Initially created for our core team of 5, the tool was so successful it was rolled out to 35 markets globally and our core vendors had access to generate content that lowered outgoing costs massively. Costs were benchmarked against our three top vendors; which enabled us to discern an average cost saving per item of work (and type) produced.

Originally the challenge was to save 1 million pounds; this was exceeded in the first year and over a period of 3 years we saved a whopping 10 million pounds and recieved an award from the Brandon Hall Group in the category 'Business Automation' - Brandon Hall Group LPI (Learning and Performance Institute) 2021 Silver award in the Excellence in Future of Work category for the PMI Rapid Builder for Best Advance in Business Automation

CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS

Having worked on various print publications in the ancient past, PMI tapped into this skillset and asked me to create a number of internal Corporate communications pieces on various topics. Creating digital publications for these comms resulted in cost savings (no print cost and zero carbon as users can download)
